Why a permeable surface makes sense

Rain isn't waste that needs to disappear down the drain as quickly as possible. Where water can soak into suitable ground on site, it remains part of the natural water cycle. A permeable surface combines this benefit with a level, load-bearing and well-maintained surface.

Letting water stay where it falls

On sealed asphalt or concrete, rain runs off the surface and often flows straight into the drainage system. With a permeable build-up, however, water can pass through the open-pored surface and the permeable base into the ground below – provided the soil, location and local regulations allow it.

This supports natural groundwater recharge and relieves the drainage system during rainfall. At the same time, fewer puddles form on the surface. Drinking water is our most important resource; a conscious approach to rainwater and unsealed ground helps preserve the natural water cycle.

The entire build-up needs to be permeable

A permeable top surface alone isn't enough. For rain to actually soak away, the base and substrate also need to be planned accordingly. On a sealed concrete slab, the surface won't automatically remain permeable, even with an open-pored top layer.

That's why we assess the existing structure, usage and drainage during our site visit. A driveway has different requirements than a garden path or seating area.

Everyday benefits

  • Less surface run-off of rainwater
  • Relief for drains and the sewage system during rainfall
  • Fewer puddles on properly planned surfaces
  • A level, joint-free surface for paths, patios and driveways
  • Many colours and grain sizes for a design that suits you

Every property is different

Infiltration isn't possible or permitted everywhere in the same way. Soil conditions, groundwater protection, gradient and local regulations all need to be taken into account. That's why we plan the build-up to suit the location and clarify with you which permits or technical evidence may be required.
